When to Wean?

|
When MacBaby was one month old, I thought "I am one twelfth of the way done with breastfeeding."

Eleven months later, I no longer have such thoughts. Now that he's well on his way to becoming a foodie, the nursing is more supplemental and not at all bothersome to me.

I'm wondering, do I stick with my plan on stopping at a year, or keep it going?

On one hand, it's really not that big of a deal to keep breastfeeding. MacBaby and I still seem to enjoy the bonding it bring us, and he's capable of enjoying other beverages from bottles, sippy cups and even regular cups. And, when else in our lives will we be able to be that close? When else will I be able to provide for him nutritionally directly from my body?

On the other hand, he's still nursing to go to sleep at night, and I could have a little more freedom during the 7 p.m. hour for all that fun laundry that needs doing.

When do you decide to wean and why?

I'm telling myself I'm aiming for 18 months. In Dr Sears' 'The Discipline Book' he talks about bf being a great leveller for the exploring infant to come back to and touch base with mommy again. That makes sense to me (though I'm not paraphrasing very well). We'll see. My friend's child self-weaned at 17 months and that would be ideal for me I think.
I have a ways to go yet!

I had not made a plan for weaning Gabriel and was happily continuing although his feedings had dwindled due to self-weaning himself down to about one feeding per day. At his 14 month mark over the course of two days he bit me twice- I did my normal reaction of "ouch that hurts mommy"-the next day he wanted nothing to do with nursing and even though I tried day after day, he was finished. I had more of a difficult time with this than he did. Good luck!
